Adam Putterman, the Co-Founder of Ours Premarital Counseling and Couples Therapy, joined me on The Friday Society Podcast! As someone who is a therapy advocate, it was awesome to sit down with Adam and discuss the way Ours is marketing their online couples therapy telehealth platform.
In a world where digital solutions are becoming the norm, Ours stands out as a trailblazer in the realm of relationship wellness. Adam Putterman is the Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Ours, and he shed light on the company’s groundbreaking approach to virtual premarital and couples counseling services.
We discussed everything from the stigma around couples therapy, the challenge of marketing a therapy business over social media and growing it organically, and the successful changes they have made to their business model.
Starting Slow to Ensure Quality
The backstory of Ours is super interesting. Wd discussed Ours early days and how he met his co-founder, Jess. The two were essentially working on a similar business model but with two different focuses. After connecting through mutual acquaintances they decided to form a partnership and bring their individual expertise to form Ours.
Their collaboration has been fundamental in creating a modern therapy practice that is both effective and accessible. Ours takes pride in matching couples with therapists who are best suited to their unique needs, ensuring a personalized and effective therapeutic experience.
One of their early strategic moves was by forming a waitlist before they officially launched. This strategic move wasn’t just about managing demand—it was about ensuring that each interaction was high-quality and meaningful for their early users. This careful and deliberate approach allowed Ours to fine-tune their services, making sure that couples receive the best possible experience.
Normalizing Couples Therapy
One of the core missions of Ours is to normalize couples therapy and premarital counseling. Typically, couples therapy, or even therapy in general, has been a hush-hush topic. However, in the past 3-5 years we have seen a shift to normalizing how important therapy really is.
Personally, I feel like couples therapy is still not as widely talked about as individual therapy but Ours is on a mission to change that.
Adam discusses how they are achieving this through community building and organic marketing strategies. By fostering a supportive community, Ours is breaking down the stigma that often surrounds couples therapy, making it a more accepted and proactive step in maintaining healthy relationships.
Tackling Stigma and Enhancing User Experience
User experience and hearing candid feedback from customers is of high importance to Adam and his team. They have made strategic decisions to enter beta phases. This has allowed them to gather valuable feedback to improve the user experience.
By understanding what programs have, and haven’t worked, for Ours has allowed them to pivot quickly. For example, early on they had a group therapy program which was super successful during the actual therapy meetings. However, in the long-run it required too much marketing and hand holding to get couples to sign up. They decided that at this time it wasn’t worth the effort to continue this type of group couples therapy program.
Targeting Engaged Couples
Ours has found great success in targeting engaged couples. Engaged couples are at a critical juncture in their relationships, making them ideal candidates for Ours services.
Traditionally, couples would seek premarital counseling from their minister. However, couples are having more non-religious weddings and they have no where to turn to. They created strong partnerships with companies and influencers in the wedding industry. I think this marketing strategy is brilliant!
These partnerships help to highlight the importance of couples therapy for mental well-being, making therapy a more integral part of the conversation around wedding planning and relationship maintenance.
Business Operations and Marketing Pivots
Adam and I discussed how Ours has had to overcome marketing challenges such as branding, copy, and organically growing their presence over social. If you are an online business, I highly recommend listening to this episode because they have learned a lot about how to reach their target audience in a mindful way.
