Guys!! One of The Friday Society OG members and all around inspiration, Jenn Seracuse, Founder of Reform Lab joined me on the Friday Society Podcast! I’ve mentioned this several times on the podcast but whenever I post about Jenn on Instagram, no joke, I always receive a response about how much someone loves her! Jenn has been featured on TODAY, FOX, Women’s Health, SHAPE, and Fitness magazine!
Her story was so much fun to talk through because the way she teaches Pilates feels like she was drawn towards it since the beginning. However, that’s not the case. Jenn’s journey from virtual classes to opening an in-person Pilates studio is not only a story of professional success but a story of passion, resilience, and the power of community.
From Bartending to Pilates
Before Jenn became the powerhouse Pilates instructor she is today, she was working her survival job as a bartender. Just a quick side note, if you have never heard of the term ‘survival job’, I hadn’t either until this episode. You have to listen because that terminology is so funny and also so accurate.
After being in the dance community for a long time she stumbled upon Pilates. She absolutely loved the way it made her feel. However, after a serious flare up of Crohn’s disease she was forced to take a step back and reevaluate what truly made her happy. This pivotal change from leaving the dance community to exclusively focusing on Pilates was about finding a new purpose and embracing a healthier lifestyle.
The Journey of Transformation
Jenn’s extensive Pilates training is a testament to her dedication and love for the practice. She had amazing mentors that helped her navigate being on the back-end of managing a Pilates studio. This gave her a front row seat as to how to run a successful Pilates studio and management.
Finally, Jenn set out to start her own Pilates business by offering on-demand classes. The back story of Jenn and I is that she was one of the first members of The Friday Society. TFSM is my monthly marketing membership where we have a fantastic community of entrepreneurs all over the world. I can still recall her hesitancy of opening an in-person studio mostly because of the pandemic.
However, after moving from NYC to Warwick, NY she decided that she wanted to plant roots and be apart of the amazing community. She found a perfect location, did as much of the construction as her and her husband could, and opened her doors!
Opening a Profitable Pilates Studio
What is so incredible about Jenn is that Reform Lab was profitable by month two! In the podcast she talks a little bit about why her timing worked to her advantage. However, I also believe it’s because people love her! No joke, she is one of the best Pilates instructors out there.
I still remember when she told me she was opening a studio and we quickly got to work on nailing down her marketing. We meticulously worked on everything from her nurture sequences, appreciation strategy, all the way to system and automations. We set up so much before she opened her doors!
Engaging Clients and Building a Community
One of the highlights of our conversation with Jenn is her approach to client engagement. Through thoughtful gestures, effective marketing tools, and automated communication, Jenn has built a community at Reform Lab that feels more like a family. She understands that running a successful studio is not just about the exercises but about creating an environment where clients feel valued and connected.
Balancing Roles with Grace
Jenn is a mother of two. Balancing work and family life, especially post-maternity leave, presented its own set of challenges. Jenn was really open about how juggling work-life and family-life can be difficult at times.
As a studio owner and mother, Jenn’s life is a delicate balance of responsibilities. She emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and leaning on family support. She used to be the primary caregiver and now she is leaning on her husband for more support. Her story is a reminder that while the journey may be demanding, it is also incredibly rewarding.
