‘The way we treat our bodies is the way we live.’ Eoin Finn

Eoin Finn with Blissology Yoga is back for a second episode on The Friday Society Podcast! In our first episode (see link below) we barely scratched the surface of Eoin’s knowledge. In this episode, I wanted to dive deep into nervous system regulation and the science behind it.

If you’re not familiar with Eoin Finn, he is the founder of Blissology Yoga and is an expert in yoga and mindfulness! I’m so grateful to have him back for a part 2 because as a world renowned yogi he explains why nervous system regulation is so important. Understanding how stress impacts our bodies and finding effective ways to manage it is crucial for maintaining a balanced and healthy life.

The Hormonal Havoc of Stress

This day and age our nervous system is overtaxed and we can be disconnected from bodily awareness. We wear Apple watches to check our blood pressure or heart rate all the while our body intuitively knows its dysregulated.

Stress affects our hormones in complex ways, often leading to a cascade of physical and emotional responses. Elevated cortisol levels can wreak havoc on our nervous system, impairing our ability to think clearly and manage emotions.

Cortisol has a major effect on our physiology. Our tissues are innately made to respond to stress and it’s within our nature to experience stress in our life. However, if our body is dealing with acute stress day after day this can greatly impact our overall health. Mediation, physical exercise, and coming back into a place of peace helps down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system.

The Power of Self-Care

Self-care is not just a buzzword. It’s a vital practice for maintaining the nervous system and achieving emotional equilibrium.

As a small business owner, I have a lot on my plate and when I first opened my business I was very stressed! Overtime, I have learned what’s an immediate need, and what can wait, which reduces the work overload.

I’ve created healthy habits like meditation, attending my favorite morning workout, or walking my sweet pup, Rocky, when I need to disengage or slow down. It’s very intentional and I have to remind myself often to take breaks Through my own research and speaking with experts like Eoin has helped me acquire the knowledge to stay connected with mind/body awareness.

Energy Balance and Emotional Regulation

Balancing energy conservation and expenditure is key to sustaining long-term health. Monitoring heart rate variability and understanding your energy levels can help you integrate sustainable relaxation practices into your life. By regulating your emotions and nervous system, you can foster deeper connections with others and the planet.

Are you someone who knows what brings you peace or are you still looking for tools? Eoin provides great advice on how to come back into peace that is beyond just meditation or yoga. Sometimes we have to push through and sometimes we must pull back.

Due to the busyness of everyday life we may ignore the alarm bells that say ‘slow down’ & ‘step back.’ Eoin’s approach is to release the association with time and notice how you are breathing. Create a long, slow, and deep breath. Body cue’s and breath are foundational and have an enormous effect on moving into the parasympathetic nervous system

Creating Calm Environments

Creating calm environments is crucial for accessing your inner light and trusting in your higher self. Practices like hammock relaxation can promote a profound sense of well-being and a deeper connection with nature. By finding activities that resonate with your energy and personality, you can cultivate a serene and balanced life.

The science behind the nervous system is fascinating! Human biology is incredible and Eoin dove into the science about why we move into rest & digest vs fight & flight. Our bodies are immensely resourceful so don’t skip this part of the episode!

Eoin’s approach to integrating healthy stress and creating sustainable relaxation is refreshing. There are a lot of buzzwords right now around nervous system regulation and Eoin explains why some of the information we are hearing is not entirely correct.

Eoin is all about ‘Hammock Enlightenment’ and I’m onboard with that methodology.
