The Future of Pilates and Small Business Ownership

One of my favorite parts of hosting the Forever Friday Consulting podcast is getting to sit down with business owners who have built something truly special. In this episode, I had the opportunity to chat with Allie Duffy, Founder of The Pilates RX, and our conversation was filled with honest insights about entrepreneurship, growth, and what it really takes to build a sustainable business all while juggling motherhood.
The Pilates RX is incredibly unique. It is a concierge physical therapy and pilates business. Allie holds a doctorate in Physical therapy and helps heal her clients through intentional movement.
As a small business health and wellness marketing consultant, I work with so many business owners who feel like they have to do everything perfectly before they put themselves out there. Allie is a great example of someone who focused less on perfection and more on consistently serving her clients while allowing her business to evolve naturally. Her story is a reminder that successful small business marketing isn’t about chasing every trend—it’s about building trust, creating relationships, and staying committed to your mission.
What Makes The Pilates RX Stand Out
Allie is a longtime member of The Friday Society Membership – a small business marketing membership with monthly teachings, live calls, and an active community of health and wellness entrepreneurs.
Allie Duffy founded The Pilates RX with a clear purpose: helping people move better, feel stronger, and improve their overall quality of life through Pilates coupled with physical therapy. While Pilates has become increasingly popular over the last several years, Allie has built her business by focusing on individualized care rather than simply offering another fitness class.
Throughout our conversation, what stood out most to me was her commitment to meeting clients where they are. Whether someone is recovering from an injury, looking to improve mobility, or simply wanting to feel stronger, The Pilates RX creates an experience that feels welcoming and personalized.
That same philosophy translates into her marketing. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, she has remained incredibly clear about who she serves and how she helps them. As a marketing consultant, I always tell my clients that clarity is one of the strongest marketing tools you have, and Allie demonstrates that perfectly. I’ve personally been able to watch her business evolve over the past few years and she is such an inspiration!
Small Business Marketing Is About Building Relationships
One of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with Allie Duffy was that relationships continue to be the foundation of her business.
Many entrepreneurs believe they need a huge social media following or a massive advertising budget before they can grow and create long standing client relations. The reality is that loyal customers often come from genuine connections, excellent service, and consistent communication.
Allie has built The Pilates RX by creating an environment where clients feel supported from the moment they walk through the door. That experience naturally leads to referrals, repeat business, and long-term client loyalty.
As someone who works with businesses every day, I couldn’t agree more. Marketing is never just about getting someone to buy once. It’s about creating an experience that people want to talk about and come back to again and again.
We talk about this all of the time in The Friday Society Marketing Membership – celebrating your client leads to client retention.
Why Authentic Marketing Always Wins
One topic we discussed during the episode was authenticity.
There is so much pressure for business owners to constantly create content, follow algorithms, and keep up with changing marketing trends. While those things certainly have their place, authenticity will always outperform trying to be someone you’re not.
Allie shared how staying true to herself and her values has helped The Pilates RX grow into a trusted brand. She hasn’t built her business by copying competitors. Instead, she’s focused on delivering an exceptional client experience and allowing her reputation to speak for itself.
That’s something I encourage every business owner to remember. People connect with people. They want to know who they’re buying from and why you do what you do. Your story, your personality, and your values are often what make someone choose your business over someone else’s.
Building a Team While Building a Business
Building a team that you can rely on and not micro-manage is HARD! I loved the part of our conversation about employees and leadership. As business owners, we often spend so much time focusing on getting new clients that we forget our team is one of our greatest assets.
Allie shared how growing her Pilates and physical therapy business hasn’t just been about expanding her client base—it has also meant learning how to lead employees, create a positive workplace culture, and trust others to help carry the vision. That transition isn’t always easy. Many entrepreneurs start by wearing every hat in their business, and handing responsibilities over to someone else can feel uncomfortable at first.
As a marketing consultant, I see this often. Business growth eventually reaches a point where your marketing can bring in more customers than you can realistically serve alone. That’s when building the right team becomes just as important as building the right marketing strategy.
The businesses that continue to grow are often the ones where the owner invests just as much into their employees as they do their customers. Happy, supported employees create exceptional client experiences, and those experiences become one of the most powerful forms of marketing.
Motherhood Changes the Way You Lead
Another part of our conversation that I absolutely loved was talking about motherhood. Becoming a mom changes every part of your life, including how you approach your business.
Allie spoke honestly about balancing motherhood with running her business, and I think so many women entrepreneurs will relate to that experience. There are seasons when your priorities shift, your schedule looks completely different, and success starts to look less like doing more and more like creating a business that supports the life you actually want.
I work with a lot of working mother’s. Running a business while raising children requires flexibility, grace, and the willingness to let go of perfection. Some days you’re leading your team, serving clients, and checking every box. Other days you’re simply doing your best to juggle work and family—and that’s okay.
What I admire most about Allie’s story is that she hasn’t tried to separate being a business owner from being a mother. Instead, those two roles have strengthened each other. Motherhood has influenced the way she leads, communicates, and builds relationships with both her employees and her clients.
Success Looks Different in Every Season
One of the biggest reminders from my conversation with Allie is that success isn’t always measured by how quickly your business grows. Sometimes success is creating a workplace your employees genuinely enjoy. Sometimes it’s having the flexibility to be present for your family. It’s building a business that reflects your values instead of someone else’s definition of achievement.
Whether you’re growing a Pilates studio, running a local business, or building an online brand, there’s value in remembering that your business should support your life—not consume it.
That’s exactly what I took away from talking with Allie. Through The Pilates RX, she’s built more than a successful business. She’s built a company that prioritizes people, values relationships, and proves that you can be both a dedicated entrepreneur and a present mother.
